Originally the answer was 'no' based upon the iTunes T&C.
However, when they introduced in-app subscriptions, a new line appeared 'paid in App Subscriptions may offer a free trial period'
Now, in most cases, this has been applied to new content, such as magazine subscriptions.
I don't know of any cases where it has been applied to extra features.
You can always do free/paid or lite/paid versions.
